The Labour Party has called on governors and other public office holders across Nigeria to adopt what it described as the leadership approach of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party made the appeal in its Independence Day message issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the economic and security difficulties confronting the country.

The Labour Party has continued to highlight Otti’s administration as an example of the party’s governance philosophy. In May 2026, the party’s National Working Committee presented the Abia governor with its governorship nomination forms free of charge ahead of the 2027 election, with the party leadership publicly commending his administration.

In its latest statement, the party said Otti’s tenure in Abia had demonstrated what it described as credible leadership and offered Nigerians seeking political change a basis for considering the Labour Party ahead of the next general elections.

Asogwa said the party believed those entrusted with public office should place citizens’ welfare at the centre of governance and operate with empathy, fairness and transparency.

The Labour Party also used the Independence Day occasion to encourage Nigerians not to abandon hope because of the country’s present difficulties. According to the party, citizens have an important role to play in demanding accountability from elected officials and other public authorities.

The party attributed some of Nigeria’s economic and security challenges to what it described as years of ineffective governance, while arguing that addressing those problems requires active citizen participation and sustained public accountability.

As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, the Labour Party said it would present candidates across different levels of government, from the presidential contest to state Houses of Assembly.

The party urged Nigerians to consider its candidates and political platform as they prepare to make their choices at the polls.

The call comes as political parties across the country continue to organise their structures and prepare for the next general elections. The Labour Party itself has undergone significant changes in its national leadership in 2026, with Senator Nenadi Usman elected National Chairman at the party’s April 2026 convention and Ken Asogwa among the National Working Committee members elected at the convention.

The party has subsequently positioned Otti as an important figure within its preparations for 2027. In May, its leadership said the decision to give him a free governorship nomination form was linked to its assessment of his performance and his representation of the party’s stated ideals of equal opportunity and social justice.

Beyond its endorsement of Otti’s administration, however, the Labour Party’s Independence Day message focused on broader questions of governance, urging public officials to make transparency, justice and the welfare of citizens central to their responsibilities.

The party also called on Nigerians to remain engaged in the democratic process and to hold leaders accountable for their actions and decisions.

As Nigeria marks another year of independence, the Labour Party said it remains confident in the country’s ability to overcome its current challenges and realise its potential, while calling for continued commitment to responsible governance and citizen participation.
