The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has unveiled a series of proposed reforms for Lagos State ahead of the 2027 governorship election, promising to prioritise affordable housing, transportation, youth empowerment and public safety.
Rhodes-Vivour made the commitments on Thursday while speaking at a special town hall meeting organised by The Platform, a thought leadership initiative of The Covenant Nation in Lagos.
Addressing questions about his vision for Lagos and its residents, the former Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2023 election said his proposed administration would focus on expanding economic opportunities at the ward and local government levels.
He explained that his plan would go beyond providing vocational training by ensuring that beneficiaries have access to actual employment opportunities where they can put their acquired skills to use.
According to him, young people would be able to access free vocational training in areas such as tiling, bricklaying and POP installation within their respective wards. The initiative, he said, would be connected to the proposed housing development programme, creating employment opportunities for trained artisans.
Rhodes-Vivour also identified harassment and intimidation involving police personnel and street thugs as concerns affecting residents, particularly young people.
He said a proposed administration would establish dedicated help desks across Lagos State, alongside accessible contact channels through which residents could report incidents involving alleged police intimidation or harassment.
He added that legal professionals would be made available to examine complaints and provide assistance where residents are subjected to unfair treatment.
On housing, the ADC candidate pledged to increase the state's housing stock by delivering 100,000 housing units within his proposed four-year tenure. He said the programme would also create employment opportunities for skilled workers and artisans participating in the construction projects.
Transportation was another major area highlighted in his presentation. Rhodes-Vivour promised to develop a more affordable and integrated transportation system across Lagos, pledging to complete all proposed transport lines within two years.
He also indicated that his administration would encourage partnerships with private sector operators to improve connectivity and expand transportation options across the state.
On environmental management, the governorship candidate proposed decentralising waste management by giving local governments greater responsibility and involvement in the process.
He argued that increased participation at the grassroots level would improve efficiency and make waste collection and disposal more responsive to the needs of individual communities.
Rhodes-Vivour further proposed establishing a waste-to-wealth system that would convert waste materials into useful resources, including energy, while creating additional economic opportunities.
The proposals form part of his stated vision for Lagos ahead of the 2027 governorship election. However, their implementation would depend on his emergence as governor, the availability of funding, institutional capacity and the relevant approvals required for the projects.
