The singer made the revelation during an interview with Nadeska on Apple Music’s The Nadeska Show, released on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The conversation focused on the experiences that influenced his latest musical chapter, including his project Still In Charge.
BNXN explained that the decision to distance himself from some friends came several months after the release of his second studio album, CAPTAIN, in July 2025.
The 16-track album, released on July 3, 2025, features collaborations with artistes including Seyi Vibez, FOLA, Victony, Rema and the Soweto Gospel Choir.
According to BNXN, he discovered certain things about people within his circle that made him reconsider those relationships. Although he did not reveal the identities of the individuals involved or disclose exactly what he discovered, he said the situation convinced him that he needed to step away.
For the singer, the decision was ultimately about protecting himself and his future.
BNXN also advised people to pay attention to their instincts when something does not feel right in a relationship, particularly when dealing with people within their close circle.
The singer revealed that the personal challenges came at a time when he was also dealing with difficulties on the professional front.
He recalled a period when he found himself without a management team or the support structure he needed, despite his established position in the Nigerian music industry.
BNXN said the experience made it difficult to maintain confidence, as professional success did not necessarily shield him from the challenges he was facing privately and within his career.
Rather than allowing the setbacks to derail him, the singer said the period forced him to reassess his situation and rebuild.
Those experiences eventually became part of the journey behind Still In Charge, with BNXN using the project to reflect on personal growth, independence and taking greater control of his career.
The singer, who previously performed under the name Buju before adopting BNXN as his stage name, has continued to establish himself as one of Nigeria’s prominent Afrobeats acts.
His latest comments offer a glimpse into some of the personal experiences behind his recent music, while leaving the identities of the former friends and the specific discoveries that led to the fallout undisclosed.
