Amupitan said the commission was following an established timeline and checklist to prepare for the elections, adding that several key activities had already been completed while others were ongoing.
According to him, non-sensitive election materials had been prepared and distributed, while processes for awarding contracts for sensitive materials were advancing.
He also disclosed that INEC was expanding its vehicle and transport capacity to facilitate the movement of personnel and election materials. Training and retraining programmes had equally commenced, particularly on new guidelines and regulations associated with changes to the electoral legal framework.
The chairman said the commission had upgraded its information and communication technology infrastructure and strengthened security arrangements as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency.
He added that committees had been established in collaboration with relevant government agencies and other institutions to provide specialised support for the successful conduct of the elections.
Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, outlined the scale of electoral operations in the state, which comprises 17 local government areas, 260 registration areas and 4,145 polling units, according to the figures presented at the meeting.
Chukwu said coordinating elections across the state’s electoral structure required adequate staffing, logistics, technology, infrastructure and security arrangements. He also stressed the importance of sustained engagement with stakeholders at the grassroots.
He noted that electoral operations at the local government, registration area and polling unit levels must align with zonal and national plans to ensure that activities are properly coordinated.
The REC urged commission officials to strengthen internal systems, improve operational processes and ensure that every staff member understood their responsibilities ahead of the elections.
The readiness assessment also featured presentations from INEC departments on their level of preparedness, operational challenges and proposed innovations to improve election administration.
Representatives from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states presented updates on their preparations and identified challenges that could affect the smooth conduct of the 2027 polls.
The exercise forms part of INEC’s broader preparations to assess operational readiness across the country, identify potential weaknesses and address logistical and administrative gaps before election day.
While the commission says it has made progress, the credibility of the 2027 elections will ultimately depend on the effective implementation of its plans, transparent procedures, adequate security and the ability of eligible voters to participate without unnecessary obstacles.
