The Controller of Corrections in Kogi State, CC Hadiza Inna Aminu, made the request during a courtesy visit to HYPPADEC’s state coordinator, Michael Omeiza Ajayi, in Lokoja.

Aminu identified inadequate lighting as a security concern at the custodial facilities, explaining that solar-powered lighting would improve visibility around the centres after dark and strengthen efforts to safeguard the facilities.

She listed the six centres as those located in Koton Karfe, Kabba, Okene, Idah, Ankpa and Dekina. She said the request was informed by HYPPADEC’s development interventions in various sectors and expressed hope that the commission would extend its support to the Correctional Service.

The controller also pledged continued cooperation between both organisations to improve service delivery.

Responding, Ajayi described the request as an institutional need and said the commission would make efforts to address it. However, he did not announce a specific funding commitment, implementation schedule or details of the proposed intervention.

Ajayi explained that HYPPADEC operates in 10 local government areas of Kogi State, with particular attention to riverine communities. He added that the commission’s interventions extend to education, including tuition support for tertiary institution students and payment of registration fees for examinations conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).

He thanked the correctional controller for the visit and reaffirmed the commission’s willingness to maintain collaboration with the service.

The Kogi State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service disclosed the development in a statement signed by its Acting Public Relations Officer, Yabagi Abdullahi Umar.

The proposed solar-lighting intervention would address a practical security need at the six facilities if approved and implemented. For now, the request remains an appeal for support, with no confirmed delivery date or details of the scale of assistance announced.
