Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has called on Nigerians to strengthen national unity, peace and mutual understanding as the country celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Wamakko, who is also a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress in Sokoto State, made the appeal in an Independence Day goodwill message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bashar Abubakar. His current status as the senator representing Sokoto North is also reflected in APC’s published profile of him.

The former governor congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, describing the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of the country’s founding leaders and citizens who have contributed to Nigeria’s development over the years.

He urged citizens to use the occasion to renew their commitment to building a peaceful and united nation, regardless of differences in ethnicity, religion, region or political affiliation.

According to Wamakko, Nigeria’s diversity can serve as a source of strength when citizens embrace tolerance, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

He appealed to Nigerians to strengthen the bonds that hold the country together and contribute individually and collectively to the development of the nation.

The senator also stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence and understanding among citizens, noting that national development requires participation and responsibility from Nigerians across different communities and backgrounds.

Wamakko paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their service to the country, particularly their role in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and contributing to national security.

He reminded Nigerians that the country belongs to all its citizens and urged them to approach nation-building with a shared sense of responsibility.

The senator also extended his Independence Day greetings to residents of Sokoto State and members of the Sokoto North Senatorial District. He acknowledged the contributions of traditional and religious leaders to peace and community development in the state.

For the people of Sokoto, Wamakko encouraged continued commitment to values such as peaceful coexistence, respect for others and concern for the welfare of the wider community.

His message comes as the Federal Government marks October 1 with a low-key 66th Independence Anniversary programme, with President Bola Tinubu delivering a national address as part of the celebrations.

Calls for unity and peaceful coexistence have featured prominently in several Independence Day messages this year, with government institutions and public figures similarly urging Nigerians to see national cohesion as an important foundation for development.

Wamakko concluded his message with prayers for continued peace, security, unity and prosperity across Nigeria, while asking for divine protection and guidance for the country and its people.

As Nigeria enters another year of independence, his message places emphasis on the role of citizens in strengthening social cohesion and creating an environment where differences can be managed through dialogue, tolerance and mutual respect.
