Pensioners under the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) chapter of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners have commended the management of the NSITF and its Managing Director, Oluwaseun Faleye, over the implementation of a Supreme Court judgment that had reportedly left some retirees waiting for their entitlements for more than two decades.

The pensioners also praised the agency for implementing approved pension increases and paying outstanding arrears, describing the development as a major relief for retired workers.

The commendation was contained in a letter dated October 7, 2026, signed by the NUP NSITF Chapter President, Danlami Aliyu, and Secretary, Olutekunbi Ayodele.

According to the pensioners, the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment was particularly significant because some of the retirees affected by the dispute had waited for more than 23 years to receive their entitlements.

The union said the resolution of the long-running matter demonstrated that pension disputes that had remained unresolved for years could be addressed when the relevant authorities committed to implementing outstanding decisions.

The pensioners also commended the NSITF management over the implementation of pension increases and the payment of accumulated arrears approved by the Federal Government.

Among the measures highlighted by the union was a ₦32,000 increase in monthly pension payments, alongside the implementation of the 20 per cent and 28 per cent pension increases and payment of associated arrears.

The retirees said the measures had provided additional financial support at a time when pensioners were facing increased living costs.

They described the actions as evidence of greater attention to the welfare of retired NSITF workers and praised Faleye for what they regarded as his intervention in resolving issues affecting the pensioners.

The union further argued that implementing approved pension policies was important because government decisions on pension welfare only become meaningful to retirees when the benefits actually reach them.

For the affected pensioners, the resolution of the long-standing Supreme Court matter was particularly important because of the uncertainty and prolonged wait surrounding their claims.

The development also comes amid wider concerns among Nigerian retirees over delayed pension payments, outstanding arrears and the implementation of approved pension adjustments.

The NUP NSITF chapter said the recent developments had helped restore confidence among some retirees and urged the NSITF management to maintain its efforts to address outstanding welfare concerns.

The union pledged its continued cooperation with the agency and expressed support for Faleye's leadership.

It also called on the management to sustain measures aimed at improving the welfare of retired workers, stressing that timely payment of lawful entitlements remains an important responsibility towards people who have completed their years of service.

The NSITF is a federal agency responsible for administering Nigeria's Employees' Compensation Scheme, which provides compensation and related support for employees who suffer work-related injuries, occupational diseases or other qualifying employment-related circumstances. Pension-related matters involving former NSITF workers can therefore involve legacy arrangements and court decisions separate from the current Employees' Compensation Scheme.

The pensioners' commendation is ultimately a reflection of their account of the recent payments and implementation measures. Further details on the specific Supreme Court judgment, the number of beneficiaries and the total value of arrears paid were not provided in the statement cited in the report.
