Oyebanji made the commitment during a two-day stakeholder engagement and inception workshop on the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode and Statewide Enterprise Addressing Management System in Ado-Ekiti. The programme was organised by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in collaboration with the Ekiti State Geospatial Data Centre.

Represented by the project’s focal person, Olusanmi Akintobi, the governor praised NIPOST for choosing Ekiti as one of the pioneering states for the initiative. He said the state was prepared to provide the institutional backing and cooperation needed to implement the project.

According to the governor, Nigeria’s existing postcode arrangements have limitations that can complicate mail delivery, emergency response, logistics, infrastructure planning and access to services that require reliable proof of address.

He explained that the proposed digital system would assign identifiable, machine-readable alphanumeric codes to locations, helping public institutions and private businesses identify buildings and settlements more accurately.

Oyebanji said his administration had invested in the Ekiti State Geospatial Data Centre and established governance arrangements intended to support data sharing, coordination among stakeholders and compliance with relevant laws. He added that the initiative aligned with the state government’s wider plans for digital development and land administration.

The governor identified emergency response, public safety, urban planning, revenue administration and private-sector growth among the areas that could benefit from more accurate address information.

He also said the system could improve the identification of underserved communities, allowing government agencies to plan social intervention programmes more effectively and monitor whether assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries.

Oyebanji further noted that reliable digital addresses could support electoral logistics, including voter registration and the organisation of polling units. He added that e-commerce, ride-hailing, financial technology and health technology businesses depend on accurate location information to deliver services efficiently.

Speaking on behalf of NIPOST Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer Tola Odeyemi, Abdulwakil Jamiu described the project as an important step in Nigeria’s digital transformation.

Odeyemi said Ekiti was selected as a pioneer state because of its educational standing and reputation for progressive governance. She identified security, emergency services, commerce, logistics, revenue collection and financial inclusion as potential beneficiaries of the proposed addressing system.

She urged government agencies at all levels, traditional institutions, private businesses and technology stakeholders to participate in validating address data. She stressed the importance of ensuring that buildings and residents are not left out of the exercise.

The Executive Secretary of the Ekiti State Bureau of Lands, Kayode Ojo, said discussions between the state’s Geospatial Data Centre and NIPOST began in December 2025, when the centre expressed interest in collaborating with the postal service.

Ojo explained that the workshop was designed to clarify the project’s implementation plan, methodology, timetable and expected results, while defining the roles of participating institutions.

He said discussions would also cover access to relevant data, street naming, community engagement and the establishment of implementation committees. Expected outcomes include a draft memorandum of understanding, a work plan and budget, communication procedures, fieldwork checklists and operational guidelines.

The engagement is expected to help stakeholders identify local challenges, agree on immediate priorities and prepare for field operations.

While the project is expected to improve how locations are identified across the state, its impact will depend on accurate data collection, effective coordination and the successful adoption of the system by government agencies, businesses and residents.
