Reports on Sunday, October 11, 2026, indicated that the windscreens of several trucks had been smashed, while military personnel were deployed to maintain order and prevent the situation from escalating.
A military officer who spoke anonymously said security personnel were present to maintain law and order but could not immediately establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The officer added that the absence of the truck drivers made efforts to resolve the situation more difficult, as many had left their vehicles on the highway.
A truck driver, Yusuf Muhammed, said he heard that the dispute began at a revenue checkpoint where drivers were allegedly required to make payments.
Although he was not present at the location where the confrontation reportedly started, Muhammed said some drivers whose windscreens were damaged were insisting that the vehicles be repaired before they would clear the road.
The blockade also affected passengers travelling in commercial vehicles. One passenger aboard a Sharon bus caught in the traffic said she had been stranded at the scene since 11 a.m.
When contacted, the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Aondogu Orchia, attributed the blockade to an altercation between truck drivers and NIS officers at a checkpoint near Agan Toll Gate.
Orchia said preliminary reports indicated that some drivers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
According to the police spokesperson, the drivers subsequently returned to Lafia Garage and mobilised other truck operators to block the highway in protest.
He disclosed that the Makurdi Local Government Council chairman, the area commander and representatives of the drivers were meeting to find a resolution and restore normal traffic movement.
The incident has once again highlighted the disruption that disputes involving transport operators and security agencies can cause along major highways, where prolonged blockades affect commuters, commercial activities and the movement of goods.
