The President said government policies must be supported by credible plans and realistic funding arrangements to prevent the cost of poorly planned promises from being transferred to Nigerians and future generations.
Tinubu made the remarks in a post on his official X account on Sunday, October 11, 2026, stressing that leaders must find a balance between addressing citizens’ immediate needs and protecting the country’s long-term financial future.
He maintained that political leaders have a responsibility to provide relief to citizens without creating financial burdens that could undermine the welfare of younger generations.
According to the President, anyone seeking to lead Nigeria should be ready to explain the cost of their proposals, how the policies would be delivered and whether the funding arrangements could be maintained over time.
Tinubu also argued that campaign promises could appear attractive when their financial implications were postponed, leaving the public and future administrations to bear the consequences.
The President’s comments came as he highlighted the experiences of Nigerians who had reportedly benefited from lower transportation costs through government-supported compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric transport initiatives.
He referred to commuters, including Blessing, Ada and Abigail, whose journeys had reportedly become cheaper, as well as Kabir, a taxi driver who described savings from using CNG.
Tinubu also acknowledged a request from a Nigerian identified as Emmanuel, saying it highlighted the need to extend affordable transport services to more communities.
He pledged that the Federal Government would continue working with state governments to expand access to cheaper transportation and improve mobility for Nigerians.
The administration has been promoting CNG-powered vehicles and other alternative transport initiatives as part of its response to rising transportation costs following changes in the country’s fuel market.
However, the extent of the benefits varies by location, depending on the availability of vehicles, infrastructure and services.
Tinubu’s remarks place the funding and sustainability of political promises at the centre of the debate ahead of the 2027 general elections, with voters facing competing proposals on transportation, the economy and public welfare.
