Tinubu conveyed his condolences in a statement issued on Tuesday, extending sympathies to the Fasoranti family, residents of Akure, the Ondo State Government, the South-West and members of Afenifere.

The President described Fasoranti as one of the prominent figures associated with the progressive political tradition of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He said the elder statesman’s life was marked by integrity, discipline, selflessness and a commitment to the welfare of the Yoruba people and the unity of Nigeria.

Fasoranti made contributions to the country as an educationist, public servant and politician. Tinubu recalled his work in education, including his service as a school principal, as well as his tenure as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State.

The President also praised his leadership of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political organisation, and his advocacy for true federalism, social justice and a country where all citizens could enjoy greater opportunities.

Tinubu said Fasoranti played a part in Nigeria’s democratic struggle and would be remembered for his courage, political convictions and guidance. He added that the country had lost a respected elder whose experience and counsel remained valuable amid national challenges.

The President recalled celebrating Fasoranti’s 100th birthday on May 11, 2026, describing the milestone as an opportunity to recognise not only his longevity but also his years of service and enduring influence.

He also reflected on a visit to Fasoranti’s residence in Akure in 2022, when he informed the elder statesman of his intention to seek the presidency. According to Tinubu, Fasoranti offered prayers and encouragement during the visit.

Tinubu said he had hoped the Afenifere leader would live to witness another term in office and the progress of his administration’s economic plans. He nevertheless expressed gratitude for Fasoranti’s long life and contributions to the country.

The President prayed for the repose of the deceased and asked God to comfort his family, associates and all those grieving his passing.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also announced Fasoranti’s death in a statement issued in Akure on Tuesday. Reports said the elder statesman died at the age of 100.

Fasoranti’s death marks the passing of a major figure in Yoruba political life, whose involvement in education, public service and democratic advocacy spanned several decades.
