SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has announced a shift towards a multi-model artificial intelligence strategy, saying the company will use whichever AI system is considered most suitable for a particular task.
Musk made the announcement on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, while discussing the future direction of Grok Bot, the AI agent associated with SpaceX’s expanding artificial intelligence operations.
In a post on X, Musk said SpaceX would use the “best back end model for any given task,” with the decision based on whichever system was most likely to produce the best result.
Among the AI products he specifically mentioned was Claude Opus 5.5, developed by Anthropic, a company that competes with Musk’s AI business. He also named Midjourney, known for AI-generated images, and Suno, which focuses on AI-generated music, alongside other leading application programming interfaces.
The announcement marks a notable change in the way Grok Bot could operate. Rather than relying exclusively on models developed within Musk’s own AI ecosystem, the system could select external models or services when they are better suited to a particular task.
Claude Opus 5.5, for example, is Anthropic’s latest Opus model and is designed for complex coding, agentic tasks and professional knowledge work.
However, Musk did not provide detailed information on how the selection process would work. It remains unclear whether Grok Bot will automatically determine which model should handle a task, whether users will have control over the choice, or how the different services will be integrated.
There are also unanswered questions surrounding data handling, costs and commercial arrangements with the companies behind the external AI services. Early reports noted that no detailed information has yet been provided on those issues.
The move could nevertheless make Grok Bot more of a model-agnostic AI platform, with its strength coming not only from its own Grok models but also from its ability to call on specialised tools created by other companies.
For Musk, the approach appears to place the quality of the final result ahead of keeping every task within his own AI ecosystem.
The announcement also comes as SpaceX continues to expand its AI infrastructure and integrate AI capabilities more deeply into its operations. Recent reports indicate that the company has been building substantial computing capacity for AI-related work, further highlighting Musk’s growing focus on artificial intelligence.
For now, however, the full details of the multi-model strategy remain unclear, and SpaceX has yet to publicly explain exactly when and how the newly announced model-routing approach will be implemented.
