Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has described national security as a critical foundation for Nigeria's unity, stability and shared prosperity.

Musa made the remarks on Sunday in Abuja while joining Christian worshippers, senior government officials and members of the diplomatic corps at an inter-denominational church service organised as part of activities marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary.

The service, held at the National Christian Centre, was themed “Anchored on Hope: The Path to Divine Stability and Shared Prosperity.”

Musa: Armed Forces Committed to National Security

During the service, the Defence Minister said the Armed Forces of Nigeria remained committed to protecting the country's sovereignty and supporting efforts to restore peace across the country.

Musa delivered the first Scripture reading at the service and used his remarks to highlight the importance of faith, national cohesion and collective responsibility in addressing Nigeria's security challenges.

Reflecting on the country's 66 years of independence, he said the aspiration for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria remained strong.

He also appealed to Nigerians to support members of the security forces and work towards greater national unity.

Akpabio Prays for Peace and National Unity

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also offered prayers for Nigeria during the service, stressing the importance of harmony and collective effort in the pursuit of lasting peace.

The gathering brought together senior government officials, security chiefs, members of the diplomatic community and Christian leaders.

Among those present was the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, alongside other service chiefs and dignitaries.

SGF Links Democracy to Peace and Unity

Delivering the vote of thanks, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume emphasised the importance of peace and unity to the continued functioning of Nigeria's democratic system.

With Nigeria approaching another electoral cycle, Akume urged citizens to remain committed to the democratic process.

He specifically referenced the 2027 elections, saying citizens should recognise the connection between peaceful political participation and democratic stability.

Independence Anniversary Service Ends With Cake Cutting

The inter-denominational service formed part of the official activities marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary.

The ceremony concluded with the traditional cutting of the 66th Independence Anniversary cake, performed by the Defence Minister alongside other senior government officials and dignitaries.

The event provided an opportunity for political leaders, security officials, religious leaders and members of the diplomatic community to reflect on Nigeria's journey since independence while highlighting themes of peace, unity, security and national development.
