The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in Oluku, within Ovia North-East Local Government Area, after a petrol-laden tanker reportedly overturned and spilled fuel along the busy road. The fire spread rapidly from the tanker to nearby market stalls, businesses and vehicles, leaving traders and property owners counting their losses. Images and reports from the scene showed the extent of the destruction, with burnt-out vehicles and damaged stalls scattered across the affected area.

Several news outlets reported that people sustained burns in the incident. Reports indicated that at least 11 injured people were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for medical attention. Some media accounts also reported fatalities, but the confirmed death toll remained unclear amid conflicting early reports.

The explosion has once again highlighted the dangers associated with fallen fuel tankers, particularly when people gather around them to collect spilled petrol. Reports from eyewitnesses indicated that residents had approached the overturned tanker before the fire broke out.

The blaze reportedly spread through drainage channels and nearby structures, worsening the damage to shops and other properties around the market.

Chairman of Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Orobosa Eriamiatoe, and the Aiyobahan of Benin, Chief Osamede, visited the affected area to assess the destruction and sympathise with traders and residents who suffered losses.

The incident has disrupted commercial activities around Oluku Market, with affected traders facing the prospect of rebuilding their businesses and replacing destroyed goods.

The Edo State incident comes amid other recent tanker-related fires in Nigeria. Less than two weeks earlier, a diesel tanker fire in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State reportedly killed two people and injured two others, while damaging nearby shops, vehicles and structures.

In another incident in March 2026, a collision involving a gas tanker and a tipper truck on the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos resulted in an explosion and fire that destroyed nearby businesses and reportedly killed two people.

The recurring incidents have renewed concerns about road safety, emergency response and the risks associated with fuel spills from overturned tankers.

Residents are strongly advised to keep away from fallen fuel tankers and avoid collecting spilled petroleum products. Such spills can ignite unexpectedly, putting nearby residents, motorists and emergency responders at serious risk.

As investigations and casualty assessments continue, authorities are expected to establish the full circumstances of the Oluku explosion and determine the extent of the damage.
