The arrest reportedly took place at about 10:45 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026, in Magumeri town after security personnel tracked the suspect during an intelligence-led operation.
According to counter-terrorism analyst Zagazola Makama, the suspect had allegedly entered the community discreetly, causing concern among residents who became apprehensive about his presence.
His subsequent arrest reportedly helped ease the tension in the community and restore a sense of calm among residents.
Preliminary questioning reportedly indicated that Modugai had allegedly operated around areas bordering the Lake Chad region and Niger Republic. However, the claims remain subject to further investigation by the relevant security authorities.
Reports also said residents and local vigilantes provided information suggesting that the suspect may have been involved in terrorist-related activities for several years. These allegations have not been independently established in court.
The suspect is currently in military custody as security authorities continue investigations into his movements, activities and any possible links to terrorist networks operating around the Lake Chad Basin.
The arrest highlights the continued security challenges facing communities in parts of Borno State, where security agencies and local civilian groups continue to work together to identify and disrupt suspected terrorist activity.
Authorities are expected to determine the next steps after completing their investigation into the allegations against the suspect.
