Two people have reportedly been killed in an overnight attack at a mining site around Kuru Jenta in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, close to the boundary with Heipang in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:30pm on Friday, October 2, 2026, while the victims were at the mining location.
A member of the affected community, Weng Bulus, confirmed the deaths to journalists on Saturday, saying both victims were from Heipang District. Her account was also reported by other news organisations covering the incident.
According to Bulus, the circumstances surrounding the attack have heightened concerns among residents in the area, particularly because the incident reportedly occurred during hours covered by the state's movement restrictions.
She urged residents to observe the curfew and avoid carrying out mining activities at night, warning that movement around mining locations after dark could increase exposure to security risks.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, also condemned the reported killings and called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and bring them to justice. He similarly appealed to miners and other residents to avoid night operations and comply with existing security measures.
As of the latest reports, the identities of the suspected attackers had not been established and there had been no public confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command regarding the incident. Punch reported that attempts to obtain an official response were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks reported around mining communities in Plateau State in recent weeks. In September, several miners were killed in separate attacks in Barkin Ladi and other parts of the state, prompting renewed calls for improved security around mining areas.
Earlier in September, the Plateau State Government also sought stronger security cooperation following a series of attacks across parts of the state. The Federal Ministry of Information reported that Governor Caleb Mutfwang's administration had called for stronger collaboration with security agencies in response to the worsening security situation.
For residents around Kuru Jenta and Heipang, the latest deaths have added to concerns about safety in communities where mining activities take place, particularly at night.
Security authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances of the attack and determine who was responsible.
