Oke presented the diplomatic credentials on October 5, 2026, officially beginning his assignment as Nigeria’s 17th ambassador to the French Republic.
Following the ceremony, the ambassador outlined his priorities for the posting, placing stronger bilateral cooperation in security, trade and investment at the centre of his diplomatic agenda.
Oke said the new assignment provides an opportunity to elevate and recalibrate the relationship between Nigeria and France while ensuring that Nigeria’s interests are effectively represented.
He also identified the protection of Nigerian citizens in France, advancing the country’s interests and strengthening Nigeria’s international image as important parts of his responsibilities.
The ambassador said his mission would go beyond traditional diplomatic engagements, including helping shape conversations on issues affecting Nigeria, securing opportunities for the country and promoting its values and reputation with clarity and credibility.
His assumption of office comes as Nigeria and France continue to maintain extensive cooperation across economic, security, political and cultural areas.
France’s foreign ministry describes Nigeria as an important partner because of its demographic, economic, political and cultural weight in Africa. The two countries have also expanded their economic relationship, with France describing Nigeria as its leading commercial partner in sub-Saharan Africa.
Economic diplomacy is therefore expected to feature prominently in Oke’s engagement with French authorities, businesses and other stakeholders as both countries seek to expand commercial opportunities.
Security cooperation is another important area, particularly given Nigeria’s role in regional efforts to address terrorism and other security challenges in West Africa.
Oke’s appointment follows the Federal Government’s wider effort to restore substantive ambassadorial representation at Nigerian diplomatic missions after President Bola Tinubu recalled the country’s career and political ambassadors in 2023. The President subsequently approved new ambassadorial postings in 2026.
With his formal accreditation now completed, Oke is expected to begin full diplomatic engagement with French government officials and other stakeholders as he works to strengthen the Nigeria-France partnership.
The new envoy has pledged to pursue a relationship capable of delivering practical benefits for Nigeria while deepening cooperation between both countries.
