The discussions took place on October 15, 2026, during a working visit to the UK by a state education delegation led by the Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr. Margaret Adamu. Other members of the delegation included Professor Leonard Karshima Shilgba, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (UAST), Ihugh, and the Governor’s Special Adviser on International and Global Partnerships, Zaki Asen.

The meeting focused on possible areas of cooperation between the Benue institution and the University of Wolverhampton, with particular attention given to transnational education and opportunities for academic collaboration.

According to the state government, the proposed partnership could support knowledge exchange, institutional development and wider access to international educational opportunities. However, the discussions remain exploratory, with any formal arrangement dependent on further consultations and the required institutional approvals.

The delegation also considered the possibility of UAST serving as a coordinating platform for similar international collaborations involving other interested universities in Benue State and potentially elsewhere in Nigeria.

The initiative aligns with Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration’s stated objective of strengthening educational institutions through international engagement and partnerships.

If developed into formal agreements, such collaborations could help local universities broaden their academic networks, strengthen institutional capacity and explore ways to align their programmes with evolving international education standards.

The discussions with the University of Wolverhampton form part of the delegation’s wider efforts to identify practical opportunities for cooperation that could contribute to the long-term development of higher education in Benue State.

The state government said further engagements and consultations would determine the structure, scope and implementation of any partnership arising from the discussions. No formal agreement was announced in the report.
