The conference, organised as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, brought together government officials, security stakeholders and civil society representatives to recognise contributions to national development, peace, unity and security.
National President of NACCSO and VOLDI, Emmanuel Johnny, described Ajayi as a professional intelligence chief whose leadership approach, according to the organisers, has contributed to reforms within the security service.
Johnny commended what he characterised as improvements in intelligence-led operations, inter-agency cooperation and internal administration under Ajayi’s leadership. He also credited the DSS chief with efforts aimed at tackling criminal networks, including terrorism, kidnapping, arms trafficking and cybercrime.
The civil society leader further praised the alleged emphasis on lawful operations, accountability and respect for civil liberties. He specifically highlighted restrictions against DSS operatives involving themselves in civil disputes and the service’s stated commitment to avoiding the harassment or arrest of journalists.
These assessments were presented by the award organisers as reasons for recognising the DSS director-general. The award itself does not independently establish the effectiveness of particular security operations or reforms.
Johnny said the honour represented appreciation from the civil society community for Ajayi’s public service and contributions to national security.
The organisers congratulated the DSS chief and expressed hope that the recognition would encourage him to continue carrying out his responsibilities with dedication and integrity.
They also reaffirmed their willingness to work with the DSS and other security agencies through public awareness, advocacy and community engagement aimed at preventing crime and supporting national security.
The recognition adds to a series of honours Ajayi has received in 2026. In June, the Nigeria Union of Journalists named him its Man of the Year, citing his efforts to strengthen cooperation between the media and security institutions. In August, the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union also recognised him for contributions to strategic intelligence and national development.
