More than 3,200 civil servants in Bauchi State have participated in the 2026 Batch A and B State Civil Service Promotion Examination, an exercise aimed at assessing their readiness for career advancement and strengthening their understanding of public service rules.
The Bauchi State Head of Civil Service, Barrister Muhammad Sani Umar, disclosed this on Saturday, October 10, after monitoring the examination at Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP) in Bauchi.
Umar described the examination as an annual requirement that forms part of the criteria for promoting eligible civil servants to higher positions. He explained that the exercise is not limited to determining candidates’ performance but also helps update their knowledge of the regulations and administrative procedures guiding the state civil service.
According to him, civil servants moving into senior positions must understand the rules governing their responsibilities and be adequately prepared to meet the expectations associated with their new roles.
The Head of Service expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination, saying he had observed improvements compared with previous editions. Although he acknowledged that some aspects of the process could still be improved, he described the overall exercise as successful.
Umar emphasised that promotion should not be viewed merely as an opportunity to earn a higher salary, enjoy additional benefits or attain a more senior title. He said career advancement also comes with increased responsibility, accountability and expectations regarding service delivery.
He added that the examination complements the practical experience officers acquire while carrying out their duties by testing the theoretical and administrative knowledge needed to perform effectively at higher levels.
On the organisation of the exercise, Umar said no major challenges had been recorded, attributing the smooth process to adequate preparation and the experience gained from conducting promotion examinations for more than a decade.
He also disclosed that preparations for the 2027 edition would begin the following week, as the Office of the Head of Civil Service seeks to sustain improvements in the examination process.
The Head of Service urged candidates to approach the assessment as an opportunity to improve their professional competence and prepare for the demands of higher office, rather than treating it solely as a hurdle to promotion.
Also speaking, the Director of Examinations, Maigari Umaru Hamzat, said participation was open to eligible state civil servants and personnel covered by the Primary Health Care Under One Roof (PHCUOR) arrangement, provided they had registered and attended the sensitisation workshop organised ahead of the examination.
Hamzat warned candidates against bringing mobile phones and other electronic devices into the examination halls, stressing the need for strict compliance with the rules governing the exercise.
The promotion examination forms part of Bauchi State’s efforts to strengthen staff capacity and ensure that career progression within the civil service is supported by relevant knowledge and professional competence.
The eventual outcome for individual candidates will depend on their performance and the applicable promotion requirements.
