The graduation ceremony took place on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Doma, Nasarawa State, with Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, highlighting the importance of specialised training in modern military operations.
According to the Army, the newly trained personnel are expected to strengthen the military’s ability to carry out specialised missions, operate in difficult terrain and disrupt terrorist and criminal networks.
Shaibu explained that the Army’s expansion from eight to 12 divisions had increased the need for specialised troops capable of supporting field formations and improving operational readiness across the country.
He also pointed to emerging battlefield challenges, including the use of drones and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by armed groups, stressing that the military must continue to develop the skills and capabilities needed to respond to changing security threats.
The soldiers completed a six-month programme designed to improve their combat proficiency, physical endurance, resilience and ability to operate in demanding environments. The training included rigorous physical and tactical exercises intended to prepare them for complex assignments.
Addressing the graduands, Shaibu urged them to maintain discipline, precision and sound judgment while carrying out their duties. He also stressed that military effectiveness must go hand in hand with respect for human rights and the preservation of public confidence.
The Army chief further emphasised the importance of intelligence-led operations, technological awareness and cooperation with other military services and security agencies, noting that coordinated efforts remain essential to achieving lasting security improvements.
Earlier, the Chief of Training (Army), Major General Valentine Okoro, said the programme was designed around current operational demands and incorporated lessons from ongoing military engagements. The Commandant of the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Brigadier General Umar Abubakar, also highlighted the demanding physical and tactical exercises undertaken by the trainees.
Shaibu commended the instructors and training partners involved in the programme, expressing confidence that the newly graduated personnel would contribute to the Army’s specialised operational capabilities.
The development comes as Nigeria continues to confront terrorism, banditry and other forms of insecurity in different parts of the country. While the new battalion adds to the Army’s pool of specialised personnel, its impact will depend on effective deployment, coordination with other security agencies and the wider conduct of military operations.
