The assurance was given by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major-General Everest Okoro, during a meeting with an NYSC delegation at the division’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Okoro described the NYSC scheme as an important national institution that promotes unity, encourages cultural understanding and brings together young Nigerians from different ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.

He noted that the programme plays a significant role in fostering national cohesion and strengthening relationships among Nigerians from different parts of the country.

However, the army chief expressed concern about the security challenges corps members face while travelling to their deployment locations and places of primary assignment.

He assured the delegation that the 6 Division would continue to improve security measures to address potential threats, with particular attention to corps members arriving in Rivers State for orientation activities.

Okoro also commended the NYSC and its members for contributing to national development through community service, cultural integration and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.

He praised the Rivers State NYSC Coordinator, Moses Oleghe, for maintaining a productive relationship with the Nigerian Army and supporting cooperation between the two institutions.

The GOC described Oleghe as a committed public officer whose efforts had helped sustain collaboration between the NYSC and the military.

Earlier, Oleghe thanked the army for its continued support for the scheme, noting that Okoro had demonstrated a willingness to work with the NYSC despite his recent posting to the state.

He explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening existing ties and identifying ways to improve cooperation between the NYSC and the 6 Division.

The state coordinator also appealed to the GOC to sustain his support and maintain an open-door approach that would allow both institutions to address emerging concerns promptly.

Oleghe said closer cooperation between the NYSC and the Nigerian Army would help improve the safety and welfare of corps members serving in Rivers State.

The engagement underscores the importance of collaboration between security agencies and public institutions in protecting young Nigerians participating in the national service programme.
