The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement on Tuesday that the incident occurred at about 1:15 p.m., when suspected armed criminals allegedly blocked the road and fired shots in an apparent attempt to abduct unsuspecting travellers.

According to the police, the attackers were reportedly carrying AK-47 rifles when the security operatives, who were conducting operations against armed groups in the area, responded and disrupted the suspected kidnapping attempt.

The command said the prompt intervention prevented the alleged assailants from carrying out their plan. However, the statement did not provide further details about the identities or number of people rescued, nor did it confirm whether any suspects were arrested or weapons recovered.

Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism, saying coordinated security operations remained essential to preventing kidnappings and protecting lives and property across the state.

The police chief said operations in the area were continuing as security agencies worked to address threats posed by criminal groups.

Residents and motorists were urged to remain alert, report suspicious movements to the relevant authorities and cooperate with security personnel. The command also said it would provide further information as developments emerged.

The reported incident highlights continuing security concerns along some roads in Anambra State and the importance of timely intervention by security agencies. Travellers are advised to follow verified security updates and avoid spreading unconfirmed claims about the incident.
