The three-day summit is holding from October 6 to 8 at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, under the theme “Transforming Education for the Future.” The event is organised by the Enugu State Ministry of Education through the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation.
The gathering comes as Enugu continues to push major reforms across its education system, including investments in technology-driven schools, teacher development, digital learning and education management.
Participants at the summit include education leaders, teachers, learners, school owners, government agencies, development partners and other stakeholders. Discussions are focusing on areas such as teaching and learning, education policy, technology, innovation, professional development and sustainable financing.
UNICEF and UNESCO are also playing roles in the summit, particularly around technical discussions on education planning, financing and accountability.
The involvement of the two international organisations comes against the backdrop of their wider engagement with Enugu's education sector. UNICEF has supported teacher training under the state's Smart School Initiative, with 600 teachers from 30 Smart Schools receiving digital and pedagogical training in 2026.
Technology is expected to remain an important part of the discussions. Enugu's education authorities have increasingly incorporated digital tools into teaching and school management, while UNICEF and other partners have supported the use of platforms such as the Nigeria Learning Passport.
The Enugu Ministry of Education's Education Management System also integrates teacher and learner information, learning assessment and experiential-learning components as part of the state's efforts to improve education administration and classroom outcomes.
Teacher development is another major focus of the summit. Stakeholders are examining the changing demands on educators and the need for continuous professional development as technology and teaching methods evolve.
The discussions also come shortly after Governor Peter Mbah challenged Nigerian educators and policymakers to see artificial intelligence as a tool that can make teachers more effective rather than a replacement for them. He has also highlighted the state's investment in technology-driven Smart Green Schools across its 260 wards.
A key objective of the summit is to develop practical approaches that can translate education policies and investments into measurable improvements for learners.
Issues surrounding funding, infrastructure, implementation and accountability are therefore expected to feature prominently as stakeholders consider how to sustain education reforms beyond individual programmes.
The summit is also expected to provide an opportunity for Enugu to share its experiences with education stakeholders from other parts of Nigeria while learning from approaches being implemented elsewhere.
UNICEF has previously commended the Enugu State Government for maintaining education spending above 33 per cent of its budget for three consecutive fiscal years, highlighting the state's increased emphasis on human capital development.
As the summit progresses, stakeholders are expected to produce recommendations and implementation strategies aimed at strengthening education delivery and ensuring that investments in schools, teachers and technology translate into better outcomes for children across Enugu State.
For Enugu, the broader challenge is not simply expanding access to education but ensuring that pupils and students leave classrooms with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to succeed in a changing world.
