Obi made the remarks on Monday, October 26, 2026, in Abuja during activities marking the inauguration of the NDC’s presidential campaign council.

The former Anambra State governor accused the Tinubu administration of lacking the competence, capacity and commitment required to tackle the country’s pressing problems. He argued that Nigeria needed a change in leadership to address the difficulties confronting citizens.

“Today, President Tinubu has led a government that lacks competence, capacity, compassion and commitment to deal with Nigeria’s problems,” Obi declared.

He also questioned the President’s energy and ability to respond consistently to national challenges, insisting that the country needed a leader capable of providing effective direction, particularly in times of emergency.

Obi further criticised the government’s handling of insecurity and economic hardship, presenting his party as an alternative for Nigerians seeking a different approach to governance.

The NDC presidential candidate expressed confidence in his party’s prospects in the 2027 election, arguing that the country required leadership focused on improving living conditions and addressing persistent national concerns.

The inauguration of the campaign council forms part of the party’s preparations for the forthcoming elections. The council is expected to coordinate campaign activities and mobilise support for Obi and other NDC candidates across the country.

Obi’s remarks come as political parties intensify preparations for the next general election, with President Tinubu also seeking another term in office. The President’s administration has defended its economic reforms, while opposition figures have continued to raise concerns about their effects on households and businesses.

The presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s revised timetable.

As the campaign period progresses, the economy, security, public welfare and the performance of the current administration are expected to remain central issues in the contest for the presidency.
